Sakakibara Michinosuke was a komusō from Sendai who became Kawase Junsuke's first shakuhachi teacher. At the time of Kawase's first lesson, the komusō was living in the forest west of Yamagata. Sakakibara had come to play for alms at an office where Kawase worked and, when he played Kadotsuke, the music of the shakuhachi touched Kawase deeply.
