Born October 20th, 1896 in Katagai-cho, Sanbu-gun, Chiba Prefecture, Nakamura Kōzan (Nakamura Riichi) started learning the shakuhachi on his own and enlisted in the 15th Regiment of Cavalry in 1916 when he was old enough to be conscripted, but was discharged in June of the following year due to an injury. In 1919 he moved to Tokyo to train in driving automobiles and, by 1921,he was working as the lead driving instructor at Teikoku Driving School.
Around 1923, he began his study of Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Sugimoto Kōshū.
In April, 1927, he was introduced to Yasaka Reizan, from whom he received his Chuden certification.
He worked hard training with Yasaka and, in February 1929, he advanced to Okuden, and in September of the same year, he was granted his Kaiden certification and soon passed his Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) examination.
He received the performance name Kōzan, opened a new Tozan workshop in Aizan, and later established teaching offices in multiple cities.
He worked as a shakuhachi teacher in his spare time from his main job. He and his wife Hatsuko had three sons. His hobbies included raising small birds, bonsai, and collecting antiques.
