Ueli Derendinger was born in 1954 in Olten Switzerland . He studied flute with Felix Manz at the Music Academy in Basel. From 1980 - 1988 he studied the music of the Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi with Andreas Fuyu Gutzwiller in Basel (Kinko-style), from 1988-89 he studied shakuhachi with Satoshi Shimura Zenpo in Osaka (Myôan style).In 1998 he was awarded the title Master ( Shihan ) and the master named by Fuyûru Junsuke Kawase III Tôkyô (Kinko-style). In 2002, Ueli Derendinger received from his home canton of Solothurn, the Culture Prize for Music.In 2008 he continued his training in Japan with Satoshi Shimura Zenpo. Ueli Derendinger regularly gives solo concerts at home and abroad with pieces of classical shakuhachi repertoire and contemporary music for shakuhachi.
