A native of Yamagata City, Sagano Joen (born Yukinobu) graduated from a prefectural junior high school, dropped out of the Meiji University law department, and became a professor specializing in shakuhachi. His first teacher was Niigata's Saikawa Umeo, who was known as a famous master at the time. He later studied with both Miura Kindō and Jin Nyodo. During the war, in 1933, Sagano had a career in performing arts, and was sent to entertain the Manchurian Korean army with the shakuhachi at the request of the Ministry of War and the Kwantung Army. His goal was "To train in the ancient Japanese shakuhachi classics, visiting elders around the country to ask for their teachings. Old knowledge like this tends to get lost, so I will try to preserve what I can and carefully pass it along. I also believe it's important to preserve the local 'flavor' of regional versions of the classics." His other hobbies included archery, fishing, raising small birds, and photography, but he always insisted on focusing on Japanese hobbies. In Niigata Prefecture, when he studied with Saikawa-sensei, he mastered the Shimoda Meian-style pieces "San'ya" and "Reibo", among others. He was actively involved in many organizations including the Nyodō-kai, Nyoen-kai (chairman), Shakuhachi Association, and Soshi Doyu-kai. He trained many students. He would tell a story about his wartime experiences in which, after he helped a foreign national (a Russian) escape harm in his neighborhood, he found his own house completely destroyed. Taking refuge in a bombed-out air-raid shelter, he said he played the honkyoku "Kokū" and truly understood it for the first time.
