Shakuhachi
Imai Etsuzan (birth name Chōichirō) was born December 20, 1891 in Toyama Prefecture. He entered the school of Tozan-ryū shakuhachi master Nishimura Tosei in January of 1913. By February of 1916 he had mastered the Chuden repertoire and, in 1919, was allowed to teach beginning students. He sat for his Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) certification in February of 1921, which he passed with distinction. He was awarded his Shihan in October of 1925. He was a prize-winning performer multiple times, and his outreach efforts on behalf of the Tozan-ryū led him to open several regional instruction centers reaching beyond his home in Toyama Prefecture on into Nagano Prefecture. His training created a strong foundation of excellence throughout the rural areas of the region.
