Shakuhachi

Takemura Kōmei is a performer of Kinko-ryū shakuhachi honkyoku and gaikyoku traditions as a student of Living National Treasure Yamaguchi Gorō. While at university he also studied under Aoki Reibo II and Yokoyama Katsuya. A graduate of the prestigious Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, Takemura has performed in a wide variety of contexts both in Japan and abroad. He toured Africa in 1993 under the auspices of the Japanese Foreign Ministry and the Japan Foundation, produced solo recitals in 1987 and 1991, and has appeared on video and CD recordings as well as numerous radio broadcasts.
In July 1998, he was invited to perform at the International Shakuhachi Festival in Boulder, USA, with support from the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japan Foundation.
He continued to perform at concerts organized by local groups in Monterey and Santa Barbara, and was well received.
In 2004, he was awarded a commendation from the Northern Mariana Islands Board of Education for his performances in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, which were held as part of the 150th anniversary of Japan-US relations. He was invited to perform at the Sydney International Shakuhachi Festival in 2008.
Since 2017, he has been a part-time lecturer in the Shakuhachi Department of the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate students as well as students at the affiliated high school.
Member of the Japan Sankyoku Association, Kinko-ryu Association, and Chikumei-sha Setagaya Branch, and a member of the Kouno Association. He also organizes the Kōmei-kai as a group of disciples.
