The Japan-California Daily News - 6/11/32 Girl Shakuhachi Expert to Make American Tour Soon Tokio, May 15, (By Mail) - Miss Fujie Suzuki, 34, player of shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo oboe [sic])who has just returned from her concert tour in various countries in Europe, expects to leave Japan for the United States soon after completing her present musical trip in Japan. The shakuhachi music has hitherto been combined only among the sterner sex of the country and the appearance of a feminine shakuhachi-ist in the person of gifted Miss Suzuki has given an impetus to the traditional musical circles. Miss Suzuki, who is a graduate of the Nihon Women's University, has been studying instrumental music for the last 15 years. She is a "Jack-of-all-trade-and-master-of-all" sort of woman. She is good at judo (art of self defence), kendo (Japanese fencing) and even horse riding. Moreover she has a few feminine rivals in the country as a violion celloist, it is said. Plays Before President Interviewed at the ansei Hotel, Tokio, Miss Suzuki says: - "I went to Europe with the primary object of studying further the technicque of cello playing. Upon arrival there I found that the educated classes of peoples of the Continent were, on the whole, keen after things Japanese, particularly Japanese music. And therefore I played shakuhachi at various places by request and it became as though I went to Europe for my shakuhachi recital tour. Of course I did my best to master cello playing while I was in Europe." According to her, the recitals of the Japanese instrument by her in Paris attracted keen attention of the music lovers of the metropolis. Soon shakuhachi became popularly known among the Paris musical circle as flute Japonaise. She added that she has demonstrated the instrument in the presence of the French President during her sojourn in Paris. "I am now living a Bohemian life and I plan to go to the United States on my recital tour after completing my present musical trip at home," she concluded.
