Shakuhachi
Mushiake Keizan (given name Chisasō) was born 1901 in Okayama Prefecture. Both his grandfather and father were government officials, and his grandmother and mother were koto masters. At an early age he began his koto studies but, midway through his training, his mother passed away, and at the age of 12, he switched to shakuhachi and was taken under the wing of the well-known Tozan-ryū master, Wakajima Yōzan. A few months later he was accepted as uchi-deshi (live-in student) and his progress accelerated. After the death of Wakajima-sensei, Mushiake received his Jun-shihan license, began teaching in Okayama, and was then given the task of helping to develop the Tozan-ryū in China. He was promoted to Shihan in 1925, and was appointed a member of the Tozan-ryū examination committee. He performed often and was widely recognized for his virtuosity. Mushiake was a beloved teacher with many students.
