Izuta Yūzan (Izu Junji) was born April 25, 1932. A graduate of Okayama Prefectural Technical High School, he studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Shirakami Yōzan (a student of Katō Seizan), receiving his instructors license in 1960, eventually attaining the rank of Dai-Shihan and the title Chikurin-ken. He was a recipient of the Tozan-ryū 30-year continuous service award.
